Earlier today Microsoft’s Panos Panay took to the stage in New York to introduce the second iteration of its tablet duo, Surface and Surface Pro.

NEW YORK — Sept. 23, 2013 — Microsoft Corp. on Monday announced that the Microsoft Surface family of tablets is growing. Two new Surface models — Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 — along with an expanded portfolio of new Surface accessories, will be available at Microsoft retail stores, http://www.MicrosoftStore.com and select third-party retailers and commercial resellers in 22 initial markets, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States on Oct. 22 and China in early November. Additional markets will be announced in the coming months.
Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 each benefit from significant updates, including improvements to processing power and battery life, to display and camera resolution, and to the Kickstand, now with dual angles, so it’s more comfortable for you to use your Surface on your lap or at your desk. Enhancements in Windows RT 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro make Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 even more powerful and customizable.

Pre orders for Australia start at 10 pm AEST, with expected availability on October 22nd. What of the devices themselves though, while we aren’t seeing the rumoured 8 inch Surface that has been talked about, there’s plenty in both models to keep people interested. Considering it has only been a matter of months since the release of the Pro model in Australia, I wonder how many people will be prepared to upgrade in October.

What sort of a jump in features are we talking about though, The Pro 2 will include a new Intel Haswell chip, up to 8Gb of RAM, and a new kickstand that supports two positions.

With the RRP in USD ranging from US$899 for the 64 Gb version up to US1799 for the 512 Gb version [the 512 Gb version will be available in limited quantities at launch], including the Surface pen, the Pro is definitely going to be a premium device, and to quote from the presentation, “Surface Pro is literally faster than 95% of laptops on the market today”. MS have improved the display to give truer colours and added Dolby to make the sound more elegant.

Of course we cannot forget Surface 2, and it remains firmly a Windows RT device, still running on arm, with a newer look, and some other improvements, albeit a new colour [cosmetic]. I think the differentiator with the Surface to iPad and Android devices is it’s ability to run full Office suite from MS. It’s still a little bit play and a little bit work.
